Fluidsynth's player API offers several hooks that could affect the "total playback
duration" while playback is ongoing. Also, there is not "the MIDI file". There are
potentially many of them.
Anybody wanting to hook up Fluidsynth for some serious MIDI playback is
encouraged to use a MIDI parsing library, potentially fixing up overlapping
notes, and feeding translated events to Fluidsynth's sequencer API.
