It has to do with subpixel hinting & autohinting.
Times New Roman have proper hint information, so the aliasing is
redused to a minimum.
Autohinting of Free* on the otherhand tries to do it's best.
Some hints on how to reduce this "bad" effect:
1) Disable subpixel hinting (especially if a CRT is used)
2) Reduce the "strength" of hinting
3) Check the correct order of subpixel hining (RGB or BGR)
