In spite of everything Hennieis in the family way. For the first time since his wifes death John Elliot laughed. She took his suitcase and, beckoning to a red-capped attendant,handed it to him.
This had been said fromher intuitive knowledge of the character of the girl. These trees were bending andstraightening, their tops being lashed by a furious wind. He felt as if he were being kidnapped intothings unknown and unheard-of.
And this life,the life of the vast majority of men on earth, was the essentiallife of all mankind. The house through which he groped his way downstairs was dark anddead. And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. Lets giveher, while we can, such trifling compensations!
They do notwant to go into outlying districts.
Half a dozen leather-covered arm-chairs stood about. He was in an execrable humour and hated himself forgiving in to it; but that only made it worse.
But he found his room too close and warm, his bed too soft. He was sitting bolt upright in his chair, muchenlivened.
Half the purpose of his whole existence was gone. John Elliot sat in a corner, with Woodrow in front of him, thecentre of a small group of listeners. If you wish to sleep a little,go to the library and lie down on the lounge.
When he entered the parlour, it seemed less large than he hadexpected. In that purpose he and his wife had beenone; and so they had been fruitful and had multiplied.
She reached over and dropped a coin into the waiting attendantshand.
