I'm also intending to replace the configure and makefile structure
with automake source files.  Whether this is done at the same time as
the ANSI fixes or at a later stage I'm not yet sure.  5. falls under
ANSI.  The --help is a wonderful observation which I will try to
rectify at the same time.  Items like this are most helpfully logged at
the website so they are not forgotten.

The chief difficulty I face is in prioritizing the work remaining into
manageable chunks that will fit into the small bursts of time that
become available.
