I haven't had any luck with this thing.

The "splashscreen" command is not described in the documentation of GNU GRUB. I followed the how to in the last link you sent but it did not work for me.

Also, it seems those GRUB splash images must have 14 colors only and they look very rough, so I don't think is possible to have a smooth background like the one in the first link you posted:
