source code related question: poll()

Hi,

I started to (or better: trying to) port gnokii to MacOS X. I came up
with some source code related questions:

this might be a stupid question but I'm a UNIX newbee so please bear 
with me:

In MacOS X there seems to be no poll() function. Is it a Linux 
speciality or part of POSIX and I didn't look hard enough?
What does poll() do anyway?
