My current code is the transformation of the getsms function of gnokii.c
into it's own program. The only added feature is writing the messages to
disk in XML format. I think it would make sense to use XML for SMS and
phonebook. I'm willing to write this but I'd like to know if you want it
as a patch for gnokkii.c or as separate programs?

My current code is attached. You should recognise most of it since it's
taken from gnokii.c. You'll need libxml2 installed to compile this.
