Hi everyone,
I've got Knoppix installed on hard disk one of my two PCs and thought
I'd try Gnoppix installed on hard disk on the other. With the Knoppix
installation I had had no problems at all.
With Gnoppix, I thought the question about wanting to lose all the
data was the standard warning to people who don't know what they're
doing. I'd already prepared a partition on hdb for Gnoppix. But I
backed up the hdb partitions anyway.
So, in the menu I chose 2 for second hard drive, hdb. Instead of a
dialogue asking on which partition I wanted to install, the program
just issued a message saying it was formatting (or partitioning, I
don't remember exactly), then suddenly issued a string of error
messages (something to do with su I think).
I stopped the PC and rebooted. hdb hadn't been touched, but my hda
(!) had been repartitioned: hda1 was a small swap file and the rest,
hda2, nearly 80 GB, was for Gnoppix.
Luckily I've been doing quite a bit of re-installing on my PCs
recently, so I was able to restore most of hda, though it meant
temporarily fitting another hard disk that I'd recently deinstalled.
It's a pity, because if Gnoppix used the Knoppix hd install program,
it would be a great system.
Regards
Paul
