Hello all,
I'm another newbie lost in beginner land.
1) I think documenting initial setup problems is a great idea, I could
sure use this info right about now.
2) Can anyone recommend a good book for learning Linux terminal
commands? Or is this not really necessary with Gnome?
3) I have the live cd copied and it seems to boot fine and I get a
working desktop. The first thing I tried was changing some configuration
options and saving them using "saveconfig" in a terminal. It asks for a
floppy to do so. I don't have a floppy on my ThinkPad. I want to save it
to my hard disk. Is this a problem of mounting? Do I have to do a manual
mount? If so, how would I go about that?
Thanks in advance
Mike

I just installed gnoppix. Cool system. I love IT. Root can do
anything needed. The user I created cannot. The desktop loads, but
does not finish loading. No menus, just the background. What should my
next step be? Tnx, Dennis

Dear all,
after installing Gnoppix 0.6RC1 to my hd, the root file system is
read-only, so I can't do anything. Here is what I did:
I have a dual-boot running XP and Suse Linux. However, I plan to
changing to Debian and thought I'd give Gnoppix a try.
Looking through gnoppix-installfull in /usr/local/bin, I wasn't sure
what would happen to my harddrive if I selected drive 1 (the only drive)
as the place to install gnoppix. Since I already have a Linux
filesystem, I created on the existing ext3 partition /dev/hda7 a
directory called Suse and copied the whole Suse system there as backup.
Gnoppix is then going to put all its directories on hda7 as well.
So I edited the gnoppix-installfull as follows:
- change $INSTALL_PATH = "/mnt/hda7";
- add $rootp = "/dev/hda7";
- comment out everything else except
copyfile
setup
- since I have the grub loader installed already, I removed everything
in setup which looked like "lilo"
The script ran through without problems, asking me for hostname, root
passwd etc. There was one error: www.tgz no such file or directory. This
one I ignored since it didn't seem relevant.
I then edited /mnt/hda7/etc/fstab to add the swap partition and /boot,
did ln -sf /proc/mounts /mnt/hda/etc/mtab.
I copied vmlinuz and System.map on the boot partition and adjusted
grub/menue.lst accordingly.
Rebooting the machine boots into gnoppix until I get a whole bunch of
error messages about "can't stat /etc/skel" and /root being read-only
Checking dmesg told me:
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode
VFS: mounted root read-only
Probably as a resultof this, also /proc is empty
Is that a relict from gnoppix being a live-cd and therefore root being
indeed read-only? Where can I fix that?
/etc/fstab should be correct:
/dev/hda7 / ext3 defaults
Any hint would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Riko

Hi all,
I downloaded Gnoppix 0.6.0-RC1 last week in the hope that I can now
access my harddisk that is attached to the SATA port of my mainboard. I
still find /dev/hda to be the DVD drive I boot from and there are no
other devices detected nor do I find a module to activate the SATA port.
The DVD is attached to the normal IDE port. This is a MSI KT6 Delta LSR
which has a VT8237 IDE/SATA chip as part of the KT600 chipset.
As this is a low volume list, let me add the second question in the same
message. I am looking for a module to read out temperatures etc from the
Winbond W83697hf chip? Other distributions seem to carry a kernel
modules called w83781d that supports it...
Cheers,
Peter.

You have to wait for kernel 2.6 in 2.4 SATA and VT8237 isnt supported.

Any possibility to add the libata patch
<ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/jgarzik/libata/>?
Or do you think that's to risky or not enough space left? What's the
timescale to switch to Kernel 2.6?
Or is there some way I could do that myself, does the "Knoppix Custom
Kernel Howto"
<http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/KnoppixCustomKernelHowto>
procedure in combination with the "Knoppix Remastering Howto"
<http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/KnoppixRemasteringHowto>
also work for _Gnoppix_? That would also solve the problem below.

Hi folks !!
first of all thank you for all the good job done. Please go on !! I just
downloaded and burnt the Beta3 US ISO but it can't boot.
I mounted the iso in loop mode and noticed there is no boot.img file,
the boot.cat file is created but empty. Is that normal ?
Beta2 booted fine, so my DVD driver is properly configured. Any trick I
wouldn't know for the beta3 ?
Btw, in beta2, when I installed gnoppix to my hd, I couldn't see the
gnome icons. I saw this bug had been identified. Has it been fixed in
the beta3 release ? Is a hd install possible now ?
Thanks for your answers, and again my congratulations for this distro.
Fabrice.

New to Linux, so I might be missing the obvious.
I have a one HD computer. I resized the NTFS partition that was on and
left several gigabytes free. Booted Gnoppix and ran the install script.
With it, I was able to set up Linux partitions [normal and swap, type 82
and 83]. But once I save the changes and click quit, the script only
brings me back to the partition tool; I'm not able to get past that
point.
It would be nice to install Gnoppix since I really like it. Perhaps this
was a big that's been fixed in the newer releases?

I had the same problem the first time i tried the live style. I did it
twice on 2 different machines with the same result as you. I have
adopted the debian style since then on 3 installs with no such problem.
One thing to note is that you have to delete the old gnome session
files once you get up and running if you want a "normal" desktop.

Nero has an option to burn an image. If you have access to Nero, then
that is the option to choose. The Gnoppix image files are like all the
other current crop of .iso files, they are bootable but need to be be
burnt as image files. Ignore the option to create a bootable CD, it is
not relevant. On, 24 Jan 2004 11:33:39 -0800 (PST) John Smothers
