Has anyone seen anything like this? ...or perhaps have a clue what could be causing it?

I had similar problems on NetBSD-2.0_RC4 when I was compiling tla-1.3-rcXX from sources. I managed to get it working when I compiled it like this:

                          GNU Arch on NetBSD
                          ==================

* Install GNU stuff:

  - GNU patch 2.5.4
  - GNU tar 1.12
  - make `tlatar' a symlink to `GNU tar 1.12'

* Install official GZIP

   - gzip 1.2.4
   - make sure that gzip-1.2.4 is the first zip in your path.

* Configure Arch:

   $ ../configure --with-gnu-patch=gpatch --with-gnu-tar=tlatar
   $ make
   $ make test

I also tried other GNU tar versions but 1.12 was the only one that worked for me. I am not sure what's the problem but NetBSD has its own gzip version, maybe that's not 100% compatible with www.gzip.org version...
