Sorry, I can't tell.  I do not know how the RSS backend of Gnus is
working.  (Actually, I haven't even used Gnus for reading RSS feeds. I
am using Gnus for Usenet news only.)

I suspect that it would not be very easy to merge the Atom support
from newsticker.el into Gnus.  It may, however, be helpful to see how
newsticker.el manages the parsing of RSS and Atom data (see
`newsticker--sentinel' and `newsticker--parse-.*').
