Well, OK:  mplayer supports some proprietary codecs but I don't see how
this encourage it's use.  And second:  For video *encoding* only codecs
with a GPL compatible implementation are supported.  I think one can
call this "encouraging the use of free codecs".

The mplayer website explicitly states that the binary only codecs are
not needed to play the most common video files.  It's your choice, no
encouragement at all (at least from my view).
