I'm bemused by the notion that you find this peculiar. Stallman is doing his best to assure that users of software have the right to run, read, modify, and share it. In a world where digital restrictions reach into many devices, he appears prescient, and his concerns are now understandable by the lay public, not just by programmers.

Prescient? Yehhhh.
