Perhaps the definitions of "mere aggregation" and "combined work" can be compared and contrasted. It sounds like blind men are describing an elephant. When describing a legal document, definitions are of great importance.
The OP is writing an application which interoperates with a database schema created by a GPLed program. While, in fact, his application does not need to be released under the GPL, that is because his program contains no GPLed code.
