Subject: Reminder: OpenStreetMap mapping party 4/18 and 4/19

Hello friends and relations! Just wanted to remind you of the mapping
party coming up this weekend. Please forward this email to anybody
who loves maps, hiking, cycling, community activism, or open source.

Plans: I'm arriving Wednesday night at 8:30PM, speaking at Courant
Institute (Columbia) at 3:30 on Thursday, I'm free on Friday, and of
course the mapping parties on Saturday and Sunday until 5 (scheduled
to 4 but people are usually having fun and don't want to stop). If
you're coming to the mapping party, great, I'll see you there.
Otherwise, if you want to get together, drop me an email or give me a
 call: 315-323-1241.

Hi! I'm hosting an OpenStreetMap mapping party April 18th and 19th in
NYC. Earlier, in February, we were at a Five Guys south of Central
Park. This time we'll be in DUMBO at ReBar.

OpenStreetMap is a freely licensed set of geodata which is community-
maintained similar to Wikipedia. The data comes from people tracing
aerial photographs, and from people gathering data in the field with
GPS receivers. We've done a TIGER dataset import, but I expect that
everyone reading this knows that it needs fixing. And it's BEEN fixed
many times by proprietary companies. Now we have a chance to fix it
once and for all in a way that it can't be taken proprietary.

Several things happen at a mapping party:
 o Introductory presentation on OpenStreetMap
o I'll show you how to do "armchair mapping" (tracing aerial photos).
o I have GPS receivers to lend out, so that people can go out and
gather street name information, and points of interest.
o and some people just want to socialize and talk about maps.

All skills will be taught. It's a fun time. The details:
