Near where Alex lives, you can.  At least, the local council could, and
they killed and uprooted around 30 mature healthy trees in the park,
despite the protestations of ~100,000 people in a demonstration.  Oh, and
the police disrupted the demonstration, shooting people in the face with
water cannon, causing severe injuries, despite the lack of any preceding
violence.
