I managed to fix that by replacing
include $(depth)/mutopia/mutopia.make
by
include $(depth)/make/stepmake.make
in the GNUmakefiles below the mutopia directory.
Or you could probably removed the mutopia dir from the top
GNUmakefile, since you probably don't need to build mutopia.
