Hi. My name is Margaret Elliott. I am a researcher from the Institute for Software Research, University of California, Irvine. My colleagues Walt Scacchi, Research Professor from the University of California, Irvine, and Mark Ackerman, Research Professor from the Computer Science Department at the University of Michigan are gathering data for a paper on the origins of the Kernel Cousins and how they are used in projects like GNUe. (See our Web site for some papers we have written on GNUe and on free and open source software development: http://www.isr.uci.edu/research-open-source.htm.)

We noticed that Peter Sullivan first wrote the KCs, then he stopped writing them around August 2003, Arturas took over the job, and then stopped in early 2004. Can anyone help us out by possibly answer some of these questions:

1. Did the KCs become sleeping cousins because no one else volunteered to write them?

2. Do you all REALLY miss reading the KCs instead of now having to review the IRC and mailing lists?

3. Are the KCs less important now than in 2001-2003 since more of GNUe is complete?

4. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Peter Sullivan, the person who appears to have written most of the KCs but does not appear on the GNUe Web site contributor list? Id like to send him some email asking him about his KC experience.

5. How about Arturas Krakovas who took over the KCs for a while after Peter left? Is he still active in GNUe but not in KCs?

Thank you for your interest in our research and I hope that you can help us with these questions.

Best wishes,
Margaret Elliott
