Naturally the engine we recommend is GNU Go. I would get
gnugo-3.4 or gnugo-3.5.2 and cgoban-1.9.12 or cgoban-1.9.14.

GNU Go is the engine. You can use it without a client but
the client (cgoban) gives you a nice graphical display.
Both GNU Go and Cgoban 1 are free software.
