Hi Marc,
thanks for your report.
We are still experiencing intermittent problems with the
Apache installation on our public server which is the reason
for the socket problem you encountered while GNUmed was
checking for newer versions.
You can work around the issue and avoid the check alltogether
by adding --skip-update-check to the command line arguments
when calling GNUmed.
I am currently making GNUmed deal more gracefully with this
sort of problem.
