I've done UML modeling. It's not the save-us-all pill touted by some, but
it can help you in designing your OO system. 

However, I will warn, as a database person, that UML is useless for
modeling databases or data. C.J. Date has written quite a bit about it,

I really like "UML Distilled". It's a short, to-the-point book, something
rare in the computing publishing industry these days. Those wanting the
whole thing in excrutiating details will want the UML User's Guide.

What are we wanting to model here?
