It is different in 2.4. It is smaller. Take a look at the videos which show
Karsten's wx2.4.

I am on some wx 2.5.3 which ships with SUSE and see the sam behavior you do.

The minute I type something the field gets smaller and when I reach the end of
the line it brings up a new line. I am running KDE with qt-gtk enabled and
suspected this to be the reason.
