At least as far as using the LaTeX engine is concerned.
Anything printed via the OOo engine does its own (OOo
internal, that is) printing.

No, we send it to that gm-print_doc which is first in the
system PATH (that, however, does send it to either kprinter
or gtklp, incidentally, at least in the release default).

Apparently. On Windows, I'm sure there's some freeware,
shareware or the like (the one referenced in this thread
comes close).

That solution is limited to PDF files but it certainly works
for now.

I'd say next to the non-existant system-native print-a-file
printing system frontend a very widely installed second
choice solution is much desirable. Like the pretty much
ubiquitous Adobe Reader.
