I have to disagree. CSS1 existed at the time and NS4 doesn't even come
close to implementing it completely or correctly. That can be seen
here:

mastergrid.html
it is highly presumptuous
to categorically state that Old Viewers Aren't Worth Supporting
That's not what I said. I asked if it was reasonable to assume NS4
users could simply download Firebird. It was intended as an open-ended
question, not an ultimatum.
The Web is supposed to be about information exchange, not a forum for
"look at me, I'm
a web designer" types.
I'm sorry you feel that's how I was presenting it.
My goal was to create a nice-looking, simple template for the site that
was easy to maintain. CSS is ideal for such a thing. I'd *personally*
rather not support NS4 (and haven't on my projects for some time)
because you can't consistently create well-formed CSS/XHTML sites for
it. Combine that with the fact that Firebird is easily obtained, I
don't see what the big deal is.
I'd like everyone to be able to see the pages perfectly in any browser,
but I'm personally not willing to spend infinite amount of time or make
infinite amount of sacrifices to make it happen. There a number of
things to balance. And worst case, the template also works just fine in
lynx. That's one of the advantages of using validated XHTML + CSS. I
didn't realize there were issues with Opera 7, so we should definitely
take a look at that.
Believe me, I'm here because I want to increase GNUstep's exposure.
This method is as follows:
Never use CSS/2 in a stylesheet referenced by a <link> tag, because
that tag
was defined for CSS level 1 (which did not cover layout control).
Instead, use the @import CSS directive, created for Level 2.
If this works, great. I assume it won't "look right" in NS4, but the
content will be accessible?
