min, max and nans

While nosing around mpz_cmp_d in min and max, I noticed
guile> (max +nan.0 0)
+nan.0
guile> (max 0 +nan.0)
0.0
which strikes me as a bit inconsistent.
Is there a theory on what min and max should do with nans? I'd think
returning nan if any argument is a nan would be a good idea.
