I didn't take is as a complaint, no problem (and if I do produce rubbish,
it is your duty to complain :-).  However, I just did not intend this
patch to demand conditionally compiled code by users.

On the other hand:  I just checked that we would only get compiler
_warnings_ when changing the interface.  Wouldn't that be acceptable?
