Still having the ability to understand if a given hardware
worked in
old distributions seems very useful to me as it enables to
potentially
detect if some hardware stopped working at some point.
That use case is not completely hypothetical as for instance, at
some
point the radeon driver stopped working in linux-libre.
Since we found out, I added back the ability to make that driver
work
in linux-libre for the GPUs I had access to. Practically
speaking that
driver enables features like native resolution, multi-displays
and so
on.
So if we manage to find other hardware in this case, we might
also be
able to fix them relatively easily.
In the long run it might be a good idea to enable people to also
have
different results (works, doesn't work, etc) with different
distributions and somehow know more or less when that
information was
added as things also evolve, especially with distributions like
Parabola that are rolling release.
