[Help-bash] Why is c-w not bound to kill-region by default

Hi,

I tried to figure this out in the git history but the c-w binding seems
to be really old for unix-word-rubout.

Wouldn't a default binding to kill-region make more sense in regards to
emacs default bindings? Or are there other reasons for having this default?
