How about {\x..\y} does an escaped expansion?
E.g. {\Z..\a} expands to \Z \[ \\ \] \^ \_ \` \a
Or {'x'..'y'} expanding to 'x' ... 'y'

This is a reasonable extension, and would solve the {Z..a} issue.
