by what technique to send dedicated keycodes to read -e

there was an issue on irc, how to start read -e -i text at the beginning of
the text, not end as would been typed

i figured as solution a <<< __homekey__ hook to read -e and then pass user
input further

but so the coding question, where do i look up keycodes, and pass em

i tried ^[[1~ as from read -N 1 shown but that was nonsense
