I don't know.  It works here.

unicorn:~$ shopt -s checkjobs
unicorn:~$ sleep 33 &
[1] 537164
unicorn:~$ exit
exit
There are running jobs.
[1]+  Running                 sleep 33 &
unicorn:~$
