Usage of location feature

Hi,
I am working on a bison based compiler. As for the error reporting part I need to keep track of the position as well. It is mentioned in the bison manual that the usage of the @N feature makes the parser noticably slower. Would it be any worse than maintaining the same, by explicitly writing code to maintain it? The reason why I want to avoide maintaining explicitly is that the %union in would have to be changed to a structure and I'll have to revamp accessing of the variables for the entire parser code. Worse yet i'll also have to change all the $$ used previously to access the correct union member. Pls give suggestions as to how to handle the same. Bye.
