"cygcheck" doesn't run without options.  You probably want to specify
"cygcheck -s".

If you *just* want to identify the platform (NT/W9x) & DLL, then
"uname -a" would be sufficient.  But "cygcheck -s" has lots of other
(possibly relevant) information, such as mount types, the value of the
CYGWIN environment variable, and (with the latest version of Cygwin) a
list of all packages installed with Cygwin's "setup" program.  (This
tells you the versions of ash, gcc, binutils, make, ... installed.)

Finally, it would also be good to know whether anything additional was
taken from www.mingw.org, as opposed to a standard Cygwin installation.
