I like it.  I don't like it.  I'll put it in my .emacs file, and
comment it out/in as the phase of the moon changes.  There are times
that I like that M-x shell will find me the correct (i.e. *only*)
shell window.  It's now nice to have the choice.

I already get unique buffers for mail
        *mail*
        *mail*<2>
        *mail*<3>
        *mail*<4>

Perhaps your hook is no longer necesssary.
