Here is the solution. I wrote this in November and sent it to the emacs beta testers. Get the following four files http://surfer.sbm.temple.edu/~rmh/echo/buff-menu-help-echo.el http://surfer.sbm.temple.edu/~rmh/echo/dired-help-echo.el http://surfer.sbm.temple.edu/~rmh/echo/show-help-echo.el http://surfer.sbm.temple.edu/~rmh/echo/help-echo.cmt The cmt file explains why I don't like the echos and give the five lines you need to add to your .emacs to turn them off. These lines load the other three files and set some variables. I would like these functions to be included as a standard part of emacs. Rich
