How long do you wait? The first time Gnus is started, it has to
fetch the entire newsrc file from the server. This file is huge, and
can take 5 or 10 minutes to complete. After the first time, Gnus
should be reasonably fast, as it only needs to download info about new
groups, and the groups you are subscribed to.
