[h-e-w] Images (.xpm, .png etc.) in Emacs 21.2

Do you have to have XEmacs to display pictures? I use Emacs with
Windows 2000 and never even thought to try viewing images with it, but
when I tried to get chess mode working I realised that .xpm files
weren't coming out as images.

I've tried turning on auto-image-file-mode and opening a .xpm file, and
got (structured) gobbledegook. 

Any advice most welcome...
