[h-e-w] emacs call ending before editor over

I've a report from a user of lifelines
(http://lifelines.sourceforge.net)
that when he invokes the editor from within
lifelines, lifelines is invoking emacs, but
then continuing without waiting for it to end.

The program is invoking the editor with this command:
   return(spawnvp(P_WAIT, argv[0], argv));

The user has tried both
 gnuserv\gnuclientw.exe
and
 bin\runemacs.exe
as editor executable, and also has
 (gnuserv-start)
in his .emacs file.

The user is on Win95/98/ME family.

I wonder if anyone can offer any suggestions, or pointers ?
