I agree, except that these are not benefits of compiling from source.  I run
Cygwin diff, ispell and rcs (and probably a few other programs) using the
precompiled NTEmacs (not Cygwin Emacs) with no difficulty.

There are benefits to compiling from source :-)

One benefit is that you now have cygwin and access to all of those
applications that you can then run/access from within Emacs i.e. diff,
ispell, cvs etc.

Access to external utilities such as these are one of the powerful features
of Emacs IMO :-)
