Publicly visible lists which do not have a "members only" posting
restriction are just a more focused form of an open SMTP relay. It's
a modest pain to make someone subscribe to a list just to post to it,
but it's way below my threshold of "pain that matters".

I don't know how much spam comes to this particular mailing list
(because I have an egg-sorter on my end that shuffles likely spam
aside before it shuffles emacs-related traffic aside), but I sincerely
applaud anyone willing to do a moderator's role for non-member
postings.

((My own experience at co-moderating a public list is that spam
attempts outnumber legit non-member postings by about a zillion to
one. We only do the white-list thing for addresses when someone asks
for it, but we display no resistance at all when it is requested.))
