Or is he using VisEmacs for integration?  I haven't used that in a while
and perhaps there's something in the setup there, being an addin to
MSDev, that borks up the source browser.

How do you call emacs? How do you expect emacs to signal completion?
Are you merely saving the buffer from a newly created emacs or are you
using gnuclient/gnuserv to handle the request and signal its
completion?

BTW - I think it's great that you're using emacs integrated with (or
escaping from) MSVC's IDE.
