Here is how I do it (at midnight):

(require 'midnight)
(setq midnight-delay 1)

(defun update-my-calendar ()
  (let ((diary-buffer (get-file-buffer diary-file))
        (number-of-diary-entries 30))
    (if diary-buffer
          (set-buffer diary-buffer)
          (revert-buffer t t)))

(add-hook 'midnight-hook 'update-my-calendar)
