You can use C-SPC C-g for marking a position. It's weird, but works.
(In Emacs after 21.3, you'll be able to use C-SPC C-SPC for marking a
position if transient mark mode is on, and C-SPC C-SPC for starting a
region if it is off. Others mentioned one half of this already.)
