Unfortunately, this requires XWEM and the other solutions only add faces to characters in the buffers, so they don't actually draw a vertical line.
I think Emacs 21 can display graphics in a buffer, so I thought of something like putting a graphics overlay onto the buffer text. Can it be done with a standalone package (no XWEM)?
