I have used the separate functions for this now with the key binding
(global-set-key "\C-cw" 'clipboard-kill-ring-save)
(global-set-key "\C-cy" 'clipboard-yank)
if I use
;; make emacs use the clipboard
(setq x-select-enable-clipboard t)
(setq interprogram-paste-function 'x-cut-buffer-or-selection-value)
then I guess the clipboard functions are not needed?
Are there any disadvantages with the x-select-enable-clipboard t
solution?
