Maybe you want to adjust your Xft settings (in .Xdefaults), for example
like this:
!Xft settings
Xft.dpi: 96
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
Xft.antialias: 1
Xft.rgba: rgb
