Concerning GRUB

Hi:

I have been using lilo for a long time and have switched to Grub.  It is 
a wonderful boot loader but I can't seem to find any decent 
documentation that shows me equivelant types of capabilities that I used 
to have with Lilo.  For example how do you get a system to boot to a 
different run level from the command line of Grub like single user 
maintenance mode when the system has issues?  I think a chart showing 
how things are done in Lilo and then the equivalent in Grub would be 
nice.  This would make conversion from one to the other a lot less 
confusing, less frustrating and less painful.  After all Lilo has been 
around a long time and folks using its potential are real familiar with 
passing such things as hardware parameters, changing run levels, et al.  
Then add things to the chart that Grub can do and Lilo can't.

For me being able to get to single user mode before the system boots is 
a crucial requirement and I surely would like to know how to do that on 
Grub's command line.

Another key one is to be able to get directly to a shell like in Lilo with

LILO: linux init=/bin/bash (this enables some crucial maintenance 
capabilities when a system has crashed and no boot disk is available)
