linker error: hidden symbol '__dso_handle' in /usr/lib/gcc-lib/x86_64-redhat-3.2.3/crtbegin.o is referenced by DSO

I'm trying to compile some applications which are written and tested on 32
bit linux. Now I'm porting them to new IA-64 bit version of linux. Some of
the C++ modules, while linking reports error saying  hidden symbol
`__dso_handle' in /usr/lib/gcc-lib/x86_64-redhat-3.2.3/crtbegin.o is
referenced by DSO collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
GCC version I have is : gcc (GCC) 3.2.3 20030502 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-32)
Linux Kernel version :
Linux version 2.4.21-12.EL (bhcompile@dolly.build.redhat.com) (gcc version
