Looks like a g++ bug (versions 2.95.x through 3.4.0).
The code compiles fine with EDG front end, and with HP aCC.

There is a trivial workaround:

   typedef Vector<N,float> VNf;
   Vertex( VNf position = VNf( 0 ) );

compiles fine with 2.95.3, 3.3.2 and 3.4
