Not a good idea to use PARTUUID in msdos disk.
Logical partitions get renumbered if deleted or adjusted.
That's why grub allows disabling use of PARTUUID.

If OP disk is msdos, this point is moot. Just making sure OP disk is not 
GPT. Best always to be sure.

One more thing the OP needs to make sure (not previously pointed out) is 
his grub is indeed a bios grub and not an uefi grub (he says he built 
from source). $grub_platform can easily confirm it. Best also he check.
